The inspiration behind this collection is surrounding the issue of ‘tall poppy syndrome’ here in New Zealand.
Kiwis fear dressing differently, as difference attracts criticism and unwanted attention. This fear prevents many New Zealanders from expressing their most authentic selves through their clothing.
What I wanted to achieve with this collection was to raise people’s awareness that we often and instinctively dress to ‘fit in.’ I want to challenge common thoughts and opinions of what society says is acceptable and what is not.
I wanted to create a collection for the ‘tall poppies’ among us by combining a minimalist design approach with distinctive shapes and forms, to create a capsule collection comprising a range of eye-catching pieces. This collection will feature a neutral colour scheme and the individual garments can be worn during the day or night, depending on the wearer’s lifestyle.
