The project I have undertaken for my last semester is a personal reflection on my time here at Ara. My proposal question asks: “How can I create a range of experimental pieces that explore the use of semiotics to express my emotional reaction to study?”

I was led to create a collection that revolved around myself as I felt stuck when asked what I wanted to make for my final project, having spent two and a half years working towards Ara’s briefs. The garments I have created explore the emotions of stress, decay and vulnerability through fabric manipulation, and reflect the beauty through gemstones. Anger and a lack of warmth is represented through hardware details that act as a personal armour. Panel lines, loose ends and wrapping details pay homage to the learning, security and lack thereof, throughout the degree.

I hope the project will give me a sense of closure and direction to continue with. My time at Ara has ingrained the importance of technical skills and knowledge that is important to understand the industry. I am proud to have gained confidence in my capabilities with the independence to use my skills to help myself or others.
